A New Y for Barrie – Project Milestones (as of Nov.21, 19)

YMCA of Simcoe Muskoka

Site Selection:

  • Downtown identified through stakeholder engagement as the best location to serve Barrie’s growing population.
  • Third-party market research study conducted to determine the financial viability of a YMCA facility on the former Barrie Central site.
  • YMCA and HIP Developments agree to terms of an Agreement of Purchase and Sale; Y takes ownership of 3.3 acres on Bradford Street in 2020. This will be the home of our new Barrie Y.

Project Funding:

  • YMCA has secured a buyer for current Grove Street property – the Y will receive $6 million in 2020.
  • YMCA has launched its “100 Reasons Y Campaign” and has raised $5.4 million in personal and commercial commitments.
  • YMCA has secured $2.5 million in pledged support from the County of Simcoe.
  • The YMCA has applied for Federal/Provincial support through the IRCC Infrastructure fund (with letters of support from HIP Developments, City of Barrie, Barrie Police Services, Barrie BIA, Georgian College, Youth Haven, Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre, CMHA, Sandbox Centre, MacLaren Art Centre, Georgian International, Aireum Group, Imagine Canada, Simcoe County District School Board).

Project Details:

  • The YMCA’s development partners have submitted its site plan to the City for review along with the following: Functional Servicing Study, Noise Feasibility Report, Pedestrian Wind Study, Planning Justification Study, Preliminary Geothermal Reports, SAR Screening, TMP 1 & 2, Transportation Impact Study.
  • Lead partners RVH and Youth Haven have publically confirmed that they will permanently be relocating some programs into the new YMCA.
  • The YMCA intends to have a shovel in the ground in late 2020.
  • Given the above timelines, the Y will open a new 70,000+ square foot centre of community in 2022.
